Mission, Vision, & Values
Mission
Prepare students for their futures by leading teachers, staff, and administrators in a high-performing school district.
Vision
Technology use by students and staff can increase student achievement, capture student interest, allow district operations to run smoothly, and provide a variety of opportunities to effectively communicate with the entire learning community.
Technology is most effective when it is infused into the curriculum and culture of a learning community and used by students as they learn the district curriculum. Technology is least effective when it is taught as a separate subject in isolation from the curriculum. It is my job as a technology leader to provide the leadership, vision, and professional development necessary to facilitate effective technology infusion.
Today’s students are different than students of the past because they are “digital natives.” Students have grown up with technology as a part of their lives; they inherently understand technology tools and can readily adapt to new technology systems. Conversely, adults today are “digital immigrants.” Adults have had to learn or reject the use of technology in their lives. It is unlikely that digital natives will go backwards to non-digital ways. It is my job as a technology leader to provide the systems to make education relevant to digital natives while supporting the needs of digital immigrants.
Finally, I believe that planning for technology hardware, software, and professional development should be done with the participation of all stakeholders in a learning community. An effective infusion of technology into a learning community is the result of planning among all stakeholders. It is my job as a technology leader to provide the opportunities, programs, and vehicles to for this collaboration to take place.
Values
As a leader in educational technology, I practice the following values:
When making decisions about technology that affect the learning community, I include representatives from the groups affected by the decision in the decision making process. These stakeholders include students, faculty, staff, administration, community members, or more specific committees, departments, buildings, or other groups.
Effective communication with stakeholders is two-way communication using a variety of media. Communication media includes email, Internet, intranet, newsletter, telephone, visibility at building events, participation at meetings, and other methods.
I create and share knowledge by both teaching technology in the district and keeping current with my own technology learning. Within the district, I teach the practice of technology infusion, write and present materials in the effective uses of technology in education, and contribute to all curricular areas. To keep current with the technology industry, I attend workshops and conferences, participate in professional organizations, and learn new information daily about the rapidly-changing technology industry.
Fostering leadership among others begins with identifying department members, support staff members, classroom teachers, fellow administrators, students, and community members who show interest and ability in educational technology. Once identified, I endeavor to make others leaders by developing and implementing train-the-trainer sessions, creating formal and informal leadership opportunities, sharing information as it becomes available, and supporting leadership initiatives proposed by interested learning community members.
I believe that outstanding leaders:
‣collaborate with stakeholders in their learning community.
‣communicate effectively with their learning community.
‣create and share knowledge within their learning community.
‣produce other leaders in their learning community.
